outdoor movies in PNGAs the capital of Papua New Guinea, the city of Port Moresby has a lot to offer: shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, and casinos. There are even more under construction. But there is one thing it does not have: a movie theater. While New Guineans love to watch all types of movies, it usually occurs as crowds gather around a small television. In a culture without much electronic media, images make quite  and impressions in the minds of children, adolescents and adults.

Noting the popularity of movies and how even the smallest TV will attract a crowd, David and Anette Jarsetz happened upon an idea: why not use New Guineans love of movies to share the gospel? “No sooner said than ‘done’,” writes David. “We started out equipped only with a Bible, projector and screen in five different settlements. The cluster of people was growing and many people watched intently. But as we stopped the film to give the audience deeper thoughts on the film in the form of God's word, there was silence. We reached hundreds of people every night.”

“We know that this outreach had a positive impact – even several weeks afterward, both children and adults mention the film and what they saw.” But where God's word is sown, there is also resistance. Rain, power failures, drunken troublemakers, and technical problems tried to disrupt each evening. The Jarsetzes are sure that, as they continue to bring Christian films to the poor residents of these squatter settlements, the Lord will overcome these obstacles to present His truth.
