Liebenzell began work in Malawi in 1992, at the invitation of the EBCM (Evangelical Baptist Churches of Malawi). Although two-thirds of the country’s 11 million people claim to be Christians, they have little Bible knowledge and connection with any type of church. Traditional religions and superstitions tend to dominate everyday life. About 16% are Muslims. Malawi is one of the poorest countries of the world; there are no mineral or natural resources to develop and there is very little industry. Most people survive on subsistence farming. Because there are few trained workers to support the 160 congregations of our partner church in Malawi, Liebenzell has focused on theology training for local Christians. In partnership with the national church federation EBCM, Liebenzell developed the Chisomo Bible Training Centre in Mbere. Students receive Biblical-theological training to become church leaders and pastors while learning a trade to support themselves. During the 10-month term (September to June), students receive Bible and theological instruction in the morning and carpentry training in the workshop in the afternoon. They also help with the farm to raise food for the school. Only students a who are sent and supported by their local churches are accepted. The support amounts to monthly only 100 Kwacha (about one US dollar) but gives the local church some responsibility in training and supporting their future pastor. Along with training for the men, women receive literacy and Bible training as well. A ministry to women, including medical care and education, as well as youth ministries are currently being developed. |
