While eastern Asia is influenced by Eastern mysticism and religious thought, western Asia is firmly under the grip of Islam. The cradle lands of the early church count only minute populations of Christians, many of them persecuted for their faith. Active ministry by expatriates is either forbidden or strongly discouraged.

There are opportunities to serve in Asia as community development professionals. In most cases, a professional degree or certification in area of expertise is required in order to obtain a visa.
